Step into this tiny spot in East Village and allow your face to be pummeled with the smell of pastries and delights slowly coming out of the oven. If I were to open my own coffee shop, I’d want it to be just like Zuckers Bakery. My friend, Rachel, had been living just down the street, and had I been in her position, I’d have no doubt doubled my weight and lost all my money to coffee and pastries in this precious bakery.
Dixie Chicks played in the background and in the corner were books to enjoy while nibbling a pastry. Doilies on the chair are reminiscent of the precious grandma you never actually had. The dried flowers only add to the effect. Hipster as it may be, this spot is no poser. Pretty wood floors and eclectic furniture effortlessly create an unpretentious and sweet vibe.
Outdoor seats allow visitors to sip their iced coffee and watch the passersby. Inside, the small spot has a few tables and chairs, but a dozen people arriving at once would prove to be an overwhelming crowd.
The glass cases steamed up from the warmth of the fresh baked goods, and the steaminess wasfitting—I was seduced. Though everything looked scrumptious, we opted to try their “roses.” The bakery specializes in Jewish pastries, and according to their website, these roses are typically called “shoshanim,” but we only knew them as roses, cause we’re shiksas. The warm, fresh dough was delightful, especially when enjoyed with a cold brew. Even the presentation of the coffee was endearing, served with a cherub-sized carafe of milk.
Soft challah, sweet babka, and cookies (they’re like, a real thing) are all baked fresh. For those who prefer the savory goods, toast with labneh and zaatar or beet salad are just a few options on a longer menu. In the evening, wine and beer are also served.
As someone with commitment issues, I often find myself searching for the flaws to prove that my
newest love affair won’t work out. Even still, the only downside I could find to this sweet little shop are the hours. As a morning person, 8AM on a weekday is just too late to be opening. Yet, this spot is still my unicorn of coffee shops. And it exists. And I’m willing to share the good news so that you can visit too! You’re welcome.
