Me: “I think I’ll get the nitro to start because it’s so hot.”
Attractive Server: “Hot? Really?? I thought it was very cool today.”
The adorable server had hipster glasses, a slight, ruddy beard growing over his boyish face, and a crisp white shirt tucked into his old timey apron. His bright red socks poked out of his too-short trousers, a detail only visible once he walked out from behind the counter to bring me my drink.
The neighborhood is confusing, surrounded by not much, though just a short walk from where I was staying. Murals and paintings abound, as do clubs. Outside, tables with ashtrays line the covered sidewalk. Fans spin, doing little to ameliorate the humidity.
I step in to find cement floors and bright white walls. The restaurant is a mix of mid-century modern and modern Scandinavian. The tables are beautiful wood throwbacks with pinkish marble centers. A long, leather lined booth lines one side of the café, as do bulbous globe lights that feel as though you’re in a 50s restaurant. A bright neon sign with drinks behind the counter brings the coffee shop up to date.
These people seem to know coffee—evidenced by their beautiful white espresso machine, copies of Drift magazine, and the delicious coffee they serve. Iced coffee is served in little snifters—the type that I love to drink inappropriately large portions of red wine out of.
The place slowly filled with a few more tables of customers as I sat on a Thursday morning. They have fresh pastries (scones, donuts, bagels!) made daily in-house and breakfast is sold all day, as is a $5 “chuggable” glass of rose. For non-coffee beverages, choose from watermelon juice, golden milk, or another trendy beverage of choice.
I tried a breakfast sandwich and their seasonable “Thai iced coffee” beverage. Both were incredible. The sandwich was overwhelmingly large and so I chose to eat it as two opened faced sandwiches. The breakfast menu is plentiful and served all day, as the café’s name suggests. Other options besides breakfast sandwiches include a breakfast-ey salad, French toast, granola, egg dishes, or a combination of sides.
Meanwhile, the Thai coffee was a decadent portion of sweetened condensed milk with hints of mint and then smothered in their smooth nitro iced coffee. The prices are steep, but everything was perfectly done and the service was stellar, offering suggestions, printing me a receipt half an hour after I had actually purchased the meal, and checking in on if I needed anything else.
The rain started to pick up as I sat, and hunkered down, realizing I could spend all day in this type of spot.
